Permit needs depend on the exact route. Restricted-area treks require the appropriate visa selection and permit process; open-area travel may not require a trekking permit.

Good to know
Do all treks need a permit?
No. Official guidance distinguishes open routes from restricted areas. The precise itinerary determines whether a trekking permit is required.
What about climbing below 6,500 metres?
Official guidance generally places sub-6,500-metre objectives in the trekking category; an open-area objective may not require a separate permit under current policy.
Can a pass crossing be cancelled?
Yes. Guides may change or abandon a crossing when snow, weather, river, glacier or team conditions make it unsafe.
